Here are a few answers to some of the most common questions we hear at WaterWorld Scuba. If you don’t see the question you would like answered, please contact us or submit your question using the form at the bottom of this page.

Do I Need to be a Strong Swimmer to Learn How to Scuba Dive?

  • For  your own safety, you should know how to swim. We perform a swimming assessment at the beginning of your first pool session. The requirement is that you can continuously swim without stopping, but there are no requirements on the length of time it takes you to complete it or the strokes you use. At the very least you should be comfortable with your own swimming ability.

Is There a Minimum Age for Scuba Certification?

  • Yes, you must be 10 years old to enroll in the SSI Open Water Diver course. While everyone must complete the same course regardless of age individuals less than 15 years of age recieve  a Junior certification with an option to receive a Junior Advanced Open Water certification as early as 12 years of age.

What Equipment Do I Need for my Open Water Certification Course?

  • For the Open Water course you will need your own Mask, Snorkel, Fins, Boots, Gloves, and SMB. All other scuba equipment is included in the cost of your class but, must be returned at the end of your daily classes.

Am I Certified After Taking the Pool and Educational Portions of my Scuba Course?

  • No, to complete all requirements to be certified  you will need to complete your open water dives. You are required to complete 4 dives for the Open Water Certification.

Do I Have a Specific Amount of Time to Complete my Required Dives for Certification?

  • Yes, you have up to 6 months after you have completed your training (class, pool) to complete your open water dives and receive your certification. WaterWorld Scuba strongly recommends completing the open water dives in a timlely manner following your pool and academic session.

Is it Appropriate to Tip my Instructor?

  • All WaterWorld Scuba instructors work hard to ensure that you remain safe, have fun, and above all receive superior training during all of the courses we teach. While gratuities are not required or expected, they are always greatly appreciated. Most students feel comfortable with a gratuity comparable for the customer service industry in the range of 10-20% of their total course fees. Tips may be given directly to the instructor at your discretion or left at the front desk.

What is the Cost to Complete the 4 Open Water Check-out Dives for Certification?

  • This depends on the location you choose to complete your dives. Cost can range between $200-$350 and may not include your rental equipment. WaterWorld offers Open Diver Options and escorted Dive Vacations to help you complete your certification.

Do I need to Fill Our Releases and Waivers Before my First Class?

  • Yes, a release form is required every time you take a new course with WaterWorld Scuba. Please complete the appropriate form for the class you will be taking and bring it with you to your class.

Does my Scuba Certification Expire?

  • No, once you are a SSI certified Open Water diver your certification does not expire, however, if you have been out of the water for an extended period of time we suggested that you take our Refresher Course. The Scuba Skills Update will help you regain and increase your confidence, safety and enjoyment when you go on your next dive or dive vacation.

How do I Replace my Certification Card?

  • WaterWorld Scuba is authorized to print new certification cards for all students completing courses with us, but replacement cards can be ordered online. You can order your replacement certification cards through the training agencies if you have a digital camera or our staff can help you take care of this for you the next time you stop by our dive shop.
